Schools
Tempe is served by the Tempe Elementary School District, which covers about 36 square miles including Tempe, parts of Phoenix, and the Town of Guadalupe, offering preschool through 8th grade. High-school-age students in most of the city attend Tempe Union High School District, whose service area covers almost all of Tempe along with parts of Chandler, Guadalupe, the Gila River Indian Community, and the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix; the district operates six comprehensive high schools plus an alternative school. School attendance boundary maps are available directly from each district's website.
Getting around
Tempe is served by several major Phoenix-area highways, including Loop 202, Loop 101 and US 60, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is located just west of the city. The city describes itself as having 5 freeways and 8 light rail stops, along with hundreds of miles of bike lanes and pedestrian corridors. Valley Metro Rail's light rail line runs through Tempe with stops including locations along Apache Boulevard, and the Tempe Streetcar connects downtown Tempe and Mill Avenue to the light rail system at the Dorsey Avenue and Mill Avenue stations.
Homes and housing
Housing in Tempe varies by area: North Tempe includes tract homes built in the 1950s and 1960s, townhouses with HOAs from the 1980s, higher-density complexes from the 1990s, and condos that first appeared in the 2000s. Typical single-family homes on the northern end of that area run under 1,800 square feet on lots around 6,500 square feet. Downtown Tempe and areas near the Apache light rail corridor feature a mix of mid-rise condos, townhomes, and older bungalows, and the city's General Plan envisions continued higher-density mixed-use development near transit lines.
Things to do
Tempe Town Lake, created in 1999 on the Salt River at a site once used for grain delivery to the historic Hayden Flour Mill, marks the north end of downtown Tempe. Downtown's Mill Avenue area has shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. The city also contains Papago Park and the Tempe Buttes, and hosts Arizona State University's main campus and related event venues such as Gammage Memorial Auditorium.
